Cleaning Up, Protecting and Preserving Tribal Lands

    Join us for a training on how Tribes can develop their chemical emergency planning frameworks. This will include an overview on how to develop a Tribal Emergency Response Commission (TERC) or a Tribal Emergency Planning Committee (TEPC) and insights on the challenges and successes of Tribal implementation of EPCRA.

  • Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals selected to support OLEM’s Tribal Program

    ITEP has been selected to provide training, research, and online resources over the next five years to Tribal environmental professionals working in cleanup, prevention, and response programs.

    EPA announced $20 million in funding to advance recycling infrastructure under the Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grants program for Tribes and intertribal consortia and another $39 million in funding to boost food waste prevention education across the country under the Recycling Education and Outreach grant program.

      • On November 8, 2024, EPA amended the SWIFR Notice of Funding Opportunity to revise the list of eligible entities to include “Indian Tribes” rather than “Federally Recognized Tribes.”

EPA’s Office of Land and Emergency Management works with Tribal governments to protect and restore land by promoting and implementing safe waste management practices, assessing and cleaning up contaminated sites, reducing waste and preventing future contamination, and preparing for and responding to environmental emergencies. The Office of Land and Emergency Management Tribal program is committed to protecting human health and the environment in Indian country, while supporting Tribal sovereignty, acting consistently with the federal trust responsibility and strengthening the government-to-government relationship with Tribes.
